The list of great budget smartphones in the android market has kept increasing and blustering with new and more improved and yet affordable device. The Oukitel C2 didn’t only come with low price tag of just 60 USD (NGN13,500) but also has some eye catching features, same features that you’ll see in budget smartphone with the price of 100-150 USD (NGN20,000-NGN30,000).
Oukitel, the Chinese phone maker is quietly gaining a global attention with it outstanding devices, we’ve seen one them which is the Oukitel K4000 pro we reviewed a while ago, they also have many people anticipating the arrival of the Oukitel K6000 pro which is said to make its debut by April. While we wait for the arrival, we currently have the Oukitel C2 -Kiss the rainbow- on our desk, lets dive into details to uncover the features of the rainbow kisser.
Design and Display.
The design in the C2 model is just what is expected in a mid-ranger, it features a plastic unibody design The plastic cover is smoothly finished which makes it more comfortable in the hand, the oukitel C2 didn’t ship a protective rubber case. The Oukitel C2 is provided in four different suiting colours: Blue, White, Gold and Gray.
Both the power button and the volume adjustment keys are located by the right side of the device, they gave a nice feedback when pressed. At the top is the 3.5 mm jack audio port for headphones laying next to the micro USB port. There’s no LED flash on the actions keys and no notification light as well.
The display found in the Oukitel C2 is somewhat amazing, one can easily think its resolution to be 540 by 960 pixel meanwhile the its only 480 pixel by 854 pixel with pixel density of 240. The colors in the C2 model came out very bold and vibrant and the contrast remains impressive when viewed from any angle. The screen size is only 4.5 inches when measured diagonally so there will lesser light from in the screen which will help reduce the screen impact on the battery life. There is no glass protection but it did manage to come with a pre installed screen guard.
Camera and Storage
Oukitel C2 is not a good choice for the selfie lovers that will love to get the best in every shot, the phone sports a 5 mega pixels front and back shutters, it features a single LED flash at the back. The flash is not bright, even when taking pictures with it in dark places, the flash can also be used for torch purposes.
The camera of the Oukitel c2 features HDR, Face detection, Smile detection and voice capture where you can take shots by just saying “Cheese” or “Capture”, a new and interesting feature. Both the rear and front camera can capture up to 3072 by 1728 pixel images and also supports video recording.See pictures we took with the camera;
The Oukitel C2 has a native storage of 8GB but only 4GB is available for the user, However the storage can be further expanded up to 32GB with a micro SD card if the user needs more storage space, thanks to its dedicated Micro SD card slot.
Performance and OS
Here is another good new;
The oukitel C2 is running android 5.1 lollipop out of the box! although a date for a marshmallow update is not yet scheduled but we hope it will be available anytime soon. The User interface in the C2 is typical 5.1 lollipop custom UI and it operates smoothly.
Unlike many other mid range smartphones, the Oukitel C2 features Smart Gestures like: Double tap to wake, slide up to unlock, slide down to camera, draw ‘M’ to start music and so on but double tap to sleep is not available, the gestures responded quite faster than expected.
You remember the ‘Gesture Motion’ and ‘Smart Somatosensory’ features that we saw in the K4000 pro? unfortunately, it is not available in the C2 model, but that not withstanding, the device is being powered by a 1.3Ghz Quad Core CPU with MediaTek MT6580 processors which makes the phone faster in terms of processing. A much expected 1GB RAM is on board, not bad for a mid-ranger.
When I first saw the battery capacity of the Oukitel C2, I was thinking there will be a provisional power bank inside the box, but, *face palms* there wasn’t!
it houses a 1,800 mAh of battery juice although the C2 model didn’t perform too well in the battery section, it is at the same time higher than what we do see in some low budget android devices, the rainbow kisser has a battery saving mode that lets you get more out of every charge.
It didn’t come with a fast charger because it is not needed, it took approximately 2hr 30 min to fully charge from 0% with its 5V/1A output charger. The battery has a standby of 48 hours and talk time of 11hrs with 3G.
For superb sound, the Oukitel C2 was accompanied by a loud Headset. Audio quality in this device is really beyond what was expected, the sound from the C2 is very loud enough and clear – even better than what we normally see in some high-end smartphones. The call speaker at the other side is also very loud and clear during call.
The dual SIM based smartphone -with two dedicated micro SIM slots- has no support for 4G network. Network bands are; HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100 for 3G and GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 for 2G, It also supports Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi direct, bluetooth v4, A-GPS and microUSB v 2.0. There is a Threaded message format available, IM, Emails, Push mail and MMS are also available.
